Two people were transported to Whidbey General Hospital on Thursday after a two-car accident on Highway 525 in Clinton, Island County Fire District 3 reported.
Deputy Chief Mike Cotton said both cars were headed north out of Clinton about 11:30 a.m. when the one in the outside lane attempted a U-turn to get in the ferry line on the other side of the highway.
The small white Honda with an elderly couple inside turned in front of a late-model SUV in the lane next to it and was struck in the side, Cotton said.
The occupants of the Honda had to be extricated by firefighters, Cotton said. They were taken to the hospital as a precaution because of the intensity of the impact, he said.
Cotton said the airbags in the SUV deployed, and the three men inside “were shaken, but walked away.”
Cotton said the accident occurred near Dalton Realty. Traffic on the highway was restricted to one lane for more than three hours, he said.
